In New York City, 48.7% of the population is African American or Black, even though they only make up 12.3% of the United States as a whole.
White Americans make up 20.8% of New York's population, while they compose 75.1% of the entire United States.

As one can see, there is a higher concentration of African American's in the cities, and more White Americans populate the cities and rural areas. This fact also leads to other areas of imbalance, such as crime rates and gang violence statistics.
In larger cities, the gang violence rates (as of 2004-2006) are second highest in African American's, coming in at 38.4%.
